Fisheries and seafood trades have traditionally been fragmented and regional industries,
operating in exclusive markets without real understanding or co-operation with other
producers. However, these industries have become increasingly trans-national since
the mid-twentieth century. The fishing sector is the last great hunting
industry, but wild stocks worldwide are under severe pressure, and aquaculture is
seeking to fill the gap to maintain supplies.
With what the catchword terms globalization gaining momentum, the
major consuming markets of Japan, Europe, and North America have begun to source
fishery products from the world market and increasingly are consuming and trading
exotic species that are not traditionally eaten in markets. The profile of
seafood risen significantly due to its healthy image and recent scares
in the livestock and meat industries and the related concerns about food safety.
This has resulted in supply chains having to supply more diverse fishery products
and these distribution networks becoming more complex. Species that traditionally
were not normally species for transnational trade have
appeared on the market. And populations that traditionally were not seafood consuming regions have
become established on the seafood trading map.
However, to support the increasing demand of consumers is not only a matter of supplying more products to more regions. The products that are supplied have to be of high quality and safe for the consumers. The seafood trade is no longer exclusively about selling and buying seafood; the industry must also be able to provide product tracking, batch traceability, proof of origin. These issues are supported by legislation, which as yet is far from being harmonised, and is often complicated and difficult to understand.
